About/Jan Layola

Hi, I'm Jan.

Senior engineer in Breda, NL. I lead the Experience Team at InSpace, and I care about one thing above all: shortening the distance between someone's problem and software that solves it.

01 — NowWhat I do

I lead the Experience Team at InSpace. We build NOVA, an autonomous AI platform for SEO and GEO that helps brands get found on Google and in AI answers. My team owns the part of NOVA our clients see and use every day, from their dashboards to the moment they approve a page.

Most of my work is building components and patterns that scale across the product, and making sure the interface stays consistent, fast and actually nice to use. I never stop at "does it work?": I want to know who is using it, what they're trying to achieve, and what the interface is really asking of them.

I also work with coding agents every day, with guardrails I take seriously. I wrote about the whole setup and how I got there.

02 — The pathHow I got here

  1. 2019
Barcelona · NakimaAfter a web development bootcamp at Ironhack, fullstack work across web and mobile apps: React, React Native, Angular, Firebase. I learned to own the whole path, from scoping to delivery.
  2. 2021
Remote · finsit by Wolters KluwerFrontend modules, C# services, and reliability work with Cypress and Jasmine. I grew from junior into someone the team relied on for critical processes.
  3. 2024
Eindhoven · YieldComputerAutomated the release pipeline, defined the testing strategy and introduced product analytics, leading without formal authority.
  4. 2026
InSpace · Experience TeamLeading the team that builds NOVA's client platform, and building the design system that keeps it consistent.

03 — PrinciplesWhat I care about

  • Clear interfaces, for users and for the code behind them.
  • Tests that catch what matters, not tests that keep a number green.
  • Evidence over opinion: telemetry that turns guesswork into decisions.
  • Release pipelines that don't get in the way, so shipping small is the easy path.
  • Boring discipline over heroics. Most product quality comes from the unglamorous fundamentals.
  • Pushing back, gently, when a feature is solving the wrong problem.

05 — Off the clockOutside work

I've run Home Assistant since 2018 and contribute to its frontend. I'm interested in privacy and cybersecurity, and completed Cisco's Cybersecurity Foundations in 2024. I speak Catalan and Spanish natively, work in English, and am slowly learning Dutch. The rest of the time: good food, travel, and long walks with Iglu, my husky.
